Ayla

German Shepherd

Ayla was the Queen of the dog park. Not because she barked the loudest, but because everyone just knew it. She had her own code of conduct, and anyone who followed it was under her protection. She always gave three warnings — never aggressive, but perfectly clear. If that third warning was ignored, she came down hard. She never backed down from another dog, which was impressive to watch and sometimes downright challenging.
On the leash, she listened exceptionally well. But at the dog park, it was her turf, and there wasn’t much room for negotiation.
She was the best swimmer of any dog we’ve ever had. Water and car rides were the two things that made her happiest.
She came to us when she was just a few months old. Her previous owner was giving her up, and she had never been on a proper walk. Everything was new to her. When our stepdaughter got a Swiss Mountain Dog named Fee a year later, they hit it off right away. From that moment on, Ayla always protected Fee.
Zara joined us during Ayla’s final year. That was a little too much for her, but she tolerated it. And Zara certainly learned the basics from Ayla.
Ayla was a beautiful dog who came with her own instruction manual. But if you were part of her pack, she would do anything for you.
